Backups and update preparation

Before every update, create:

  1. a complete database export;
  2. a complete copy of application files and uploaded documents;
  3. a copy of environment and web-server configuration;
  4. a record of installed modules, plugins and their versions.

Verify that the backup can be restored. Put the application in maintenance mode, review release notes, confirm extension compatibility and perform the update during a low-usage period.

A backup stored only on the same server is not sufficient protection against server failure or compromise.
